Susan Colby came to central Illinois nearly 35 years ago from the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst.  After an extensive and very successful career as a sales consultant and educator for a leading eyewear manufacturer, she joined forces with Dr. Sommer in 1995 to open Vintage Optical.  After working side by side with Dr. Sommer for 20 years, she has become one of the area’s best opticians and eyewear consultants.

Sue is a member of Morton Rotary, where she has served as the club’s Youth Exchange Officer since 2010.  Outside of the office, Susan enjoys gardening, working on home renovation projects, advocating for disabled adults in Heart of Morton, and actively participating in a local book club.  She and her husband Dale, of Colby Natural Health, have enjoyed being small business owners.  They have three grown children, any of which you may see employed from time to time at either of their small businesses.

Dr. Brian C. Sommer was born and raised in Hopedale, IL and did his undergraduate work at Eastern Illinois University.  After serving two years with the Mennonite Central Committee in Southern Germany building a church and conference center, he graduated from the Southern School of Optometry in 1980.  He interned with the Naval Academy in Corpus Christie, Texas, and began his optometric career with Dr. Richard Voller in Pekin, IL.  He later moved to Woodstock, IL where he practiced for seven years.

Dr. Sommer returned to Central Illinois and opened Vintage Optical with Susan Colby in 1995.  In addition to Vintage Optical, Dr. Sommer has provided clinical assistance to the TCRC Sight Center, is a member of the Illinois Optometry Society and the American Optometric Society, and serves on the board of the Mennonite Relief Sale.  In his free time, Dr. Sommer enjoys golf, hiking and cycling, spending time with his wife, Karen, and two children, Luke and Angela.

Pam, Optometric Technician

Pam first entered the optical field in 2010 as an optometric technician in Olathe, Kansas.  After relocating to Central Illinois, she joined the Vintage Optical team in 2013 and now provides optometric assistance to Dr. Sommer.  Although she originally studied accounting at the University of Ohio, she is now looking into going back to school to study pre-med for optometry.  In addition to pretesting most of our patients, Pam is our contact lens guru, maintaining our extensive contact lens inventory.  A creative thinker, Pam has also been instrumental in organizing events for our office, including our first “Great Glasses Play Day”, an international event celebrating children’s eye health.  Pam is originally from the Central Illinois area, and is enjoying having her two children close to family again.

Lori C, Receptionist and Accounts Receiveable

Lori C joined the Vintage Optical team in 2010 after raising and homeschooling her three children into super-successful adults.  Since then, she has streamlined our accounting, scheduling, and filing procedures.  When Lori is not manning the front desk, she enjoys hiking, riding bikes, walking with her husband, and being active in her church.  She especially enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Laura H, Insurance Billing

After working for more than 35 years in all aspects of the service industry, Laura graduated with honors from Illinois Central College's Medical Office Assistant program in 2014.  She now advocates for our patients and helps us understand the various challenges associated with insurance companies.  Laura is an advocate for many, including ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, where she has been a pediatric online moderator for the past 11 years.  Laura has two grown sons and enjoys cycling, walking, and her kitty cat “Bob”.

Lauren has worked on and off for Vintage Optical over the last eight years. She edits all of our social media content and updates the website. Experienced in most aspects of the practice, you may find her pretesting or helping select eyewear!  She’s the daughter of Sue Colby and has her degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Global Studies and TESL.

Rosa, Custodial Support

Rosa came to work with us through the STEP Program at Morton High School in 2008.  She works every Friday and helps us by breaking down shipping boxes, recycling and shredding paper, and maintaining tidiness in both the dispensary and our staff break room.  Between working at Vintage and running her own pet sitting business, Rosa stays very busy!  She has been such a joy to work with and we are so happy she continues to bless us with her sunny and friendly disposition.

Claire, Optometric Intern

Claire began working at Vintage during the summer of 2015 as an optometric intern. Claire is currently pre-optometry at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, and is eager to learn about all aspects of an optometric practice! Claire has joined us again for the summer of 2016.
