Early Vision Care matters

Supporting Your Child’s Vision from the Start

blue

Your child’s vision develops quickly in the first few years of life. At birth, vision is still blurry. By around 3–4 months, babies begin to track movement and recognize faces, and by 5 months, they start to see in full color. As they grow, their visual skills continue to develop alongside their learning and interactions with the world.

Because so much of this development happens gradually, it’s not always obvious when something isn’t progressing as expected. At Vintage Optical, our pediatric optometrists take a thoughtful approach to eye care, helping you understand your child’s vision and supporting it at every stage.

Why Does My Child Need an Eye Exam?

Children don’t always know when something is wrong with their vision, and they may not have the words to explain it. Because vision develops over time, issues can go unnoticed without a comprehensive evaluation.

Even small vision problems can affect how your child learns, reads, and interacts with their environment. Difficulty focusing, tracking words across a page, or seeing clearly at a distance can impact school performance.

Routine pediatric eye exams allow our Morton eye doctors to identify concerns early and guide the right next steps, so your child can continue to develop with comfortable vision.

What We Look for During Your Child’s Eye Exam

Your child’s eye exam is designed to evaluate more than just how clearly they can see. Our pediatric eye doctors in Morton take a close look at how their eyes are developing and working together.

During the exam, we assess:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia) and other refractive errors

  • Eye teaming and focusing ability

  • Eye tracking and coordination

  • Signs of lazy eye (amblyopia) or eye turn (strabismus)

  • Overall eye health and visual development

Myopia Is Becoming More Common

Nearsightedness, or myopia, is becoming increasingly common in children, and it often progresses as they grow. You might notice signs like sitting closer to screens, squinting to see clearly, or difficulty seeing distant objects.

While glasses can correct vision, they don’t address how myopia changes the shape of the eye. As it progresses, it can increase the risk of developing more severe eye conditions later in life.

That’s why early detection matters. We monitor changes closely and offer solutions to help manage myopia and support your child’s long-term eye health.

Eye Care for Infants and Young Children

Healthy vision starts early. Even if everything seems normal, early eye exams play an important role in making sure your child’s vision is developing as expected.

We participate in the InfantSEE® program, which provides comprehensive eye assessments for infants within the first year of life. These exams help identify potential concerns early and give you peace of mind as your child grows.

When Should Your Child Have an Eye Exam?

Because vision develops over time, regular eye exams are important, even if your child hasn’t mentioned any concerns. We typically recommend:

  • An initial exam within the first year of life

  • An exam before starting school

  • Annual exams throughout childhood

You may also want to schedule an exam if you notice signs such as:

  • Squinting or covering one eye

  • Sitting very close to screens or books

  • Frequent headaches or eye rubbing

  • Difficulty focusing or avoiding reading
